Mental Illness & Treatment in White Male Culture

The #1 reason men don't talk about their mental health is because they are too embarrassed.

Statistics

  • White males are more likely to utilize health services than Black or Hispanic males.

  • In 2015, non-Hispanic black and Hispanic men were less likely (6.1%) to report daily feelings of anxiety or depression than non-Hispanic white men, who were 8.5% likely to.

  • 45.4% of non-Hispanic white men used mental health treatments to treat their anxiety or depression, where 26.4% of non-Hispanic black or Hispanic men did.

  • In 2015, white men ages 85 and older had the highest suicide rate of any demographic group in the United States.

Why the Stigma?

Most white males are comfortable disclosing or sharing information about their mental health. Of the various races, non-Hispanic white males are of the most comfortable disclosing. This is also mostly because of the coverage, or lack thereof, of health insurance.

There is not much of a stigma against white men and their mental health. When it is stigmatized, though, it is because it makes men seem "feminine" and  they feel as though they are out of touch with their masculinity.
